SWRK-– Introduction to Social Welfare Policy Analysis
Assignment 1 – Identification of Intended Topic and Search Strategies for Final Paper
This paper is a brief discussion of a topic chosen for preparation of a Final Paper for Introduction to Social Welfare Policy Analysis (SWRK-1310-A02) course. Below is a summary of the purpose statement of the intended topic, and a discussion of the process of journal and article selection, key words, as well as search tools that I will use on the chosen topic of Child and Family Services. I will include an annotated bibliography as well as my plan for additional research and questions or comments at the end of this paper.
Topic or Purpose of Statement
The topic of my intended paper is to discuss The Child and Family Services (CFS) Policies/Program and to discuss separate sections of interest within the program such as Women’s Shelters, Social Services and Disability Programs (all within The Child and Family Services criteria). My interest in this social welfare policy is mainly due to my interest in people and families. I studied Family Studies in high school and since then my interest in acquiring information with regards to programs available for people/friends/family that are available to them has peeked.
The Child and Family Services Program in Canada encompass a broad spectrum of different programs within the program. A few of the programs I would like to discuss in my Final Paper will include the Manitoba Status of Women Program, The Family Violence Prevention Program which includes topics under that umbrella such as teen dating violence, cyber stalking and help for teens and children .
I am particularly interested in this social welfare policy as I am pursuing a career as a social worker and by writing a paper of interest I am also learning simultaneously.

Key Words and Search Strings
Key words and search strings that I plan to use when writing my final paper will be based on Child and Family Services , therefore my search strings will incorporate terms such as Child and Family Services in Manitoba, Women’s Programs in Manitoba, Child protection, violence in families, and programs/policies surrounding children and youth. Searches that I performed looking for articles or webpages with regards to my chosen topic were most successful when using key terms such as Child Protection, Women Shelters in Manitoba, Teen Violence, Cyber Stalking and Child and Family were the most productive with regards to finding useful information within the Family Services umbrella.

Search Tools
While writing this assignment I have essentially used the internet searches during my research and to further my knowledge with regards to my chosen topic. I also referred to my textbook from a previous course selection titled “Family Violence”.
When I am researching for my Final Project, I will use more search tools such as government policies and procedure documents on the web as well as those available to students in the Elizabeth Dafoe Library. I will also utilize literature that I have obtained from previous courses as well as information from articles that I find of similar interest in the library/online .

Plan
The plan for additional research for this paper will include researching separate segments of the Child and Family Services Program and to really focus on subjects of interest within the program. I will research the program as a whole, as well as separate departments of the program.
will start by listing all of the resources available within the individual program/policy of interest

and will then designate a few that are most relevant to my interests and research those as well. I would like to be able to ascertain what resources are available to people with a need or that require guidance. I will use the internet, text books, journal articles as well as policy guidelines.

Questions or Comments
My modus operandi is to dissect the program into various sections to obtain policies and services that are in place for children/youth in Manitoba when and if the need is there.
The research will come from many avenues as stated above. I have a keen interest (already) in finding and researching ways that people can utilize the services that are offered and making people aware of programs that some have no idea exist .

Annotated Bibliography

This was a very helpful website that lists not only the sections of the program itself but several publications and journal articles that would be useful to my research for my Final Paper.
http://www.gov.mb.ca/fs/childfam/
This website was very helpful in finding useful information with regards to the topic I have chosen. It lists many of the available programs for families to utilize. This website was found from the first website on my annotated bibliography.

Harvey Wallace, Cliff Roberson. Family Violence: Legal, Medical and Social Perspectives, 7th Edition
Washburn University: Pearson Education Inc. 2014. Print.
Family Violence: Legal, Medical and Social Perspectives provided insight with regards to violence within families and specifically to children. It describes controversies in family violence as well as factors that contribute to violence. The text also has chapters that involve signs and symptoms to recognize abuse and the abusers.

will use this text book to enhance my knowledge with regards to the many forms of violence and the consequences of it.
